Festive Dressing

My favourite part of festive dressing isn’t buying a whole new “Christmas outfit”.

It’s the puzzle of mixing together outfits that:
• feel like me
• feel comfy and easy to wear all day
• still feel unmistakably festive

Vanessa shared something in the group this week that really stuck with me, that on the continent, Christmas dressing tends to be much more subtle. Fewer novelty jumpers, socks and PJs… more quiet, polished outfits (and I know that’s some people’s preference here as well).

But it made me realise how much I personally actually love the slightly kitsch side of Christmas we have here.

The sparkly knits.
The velvet.
The novelty earrings.
The tartan.
The “this is absolutely not subtle and I don’t care” energy.

It just feels like for once we truly get to lean into the JOY of getting dressed, without having to explain ourselves.

I love mixing those bold, festive pieces in with my normal clothes, so it still feels like my wardrobe, just with a big dose of Christmas energy sprinkled over the top.

A sequin skirt with a chunky knit.
A novelty jumper with everyday jeans.
Sparkly accessories layered onto outfits you already wear on repeat.

All the type of outfits we have already been seeing in the Facebook group. It’s just so much bloody fun!

Festive dressing doesn’t have to mean dressing as Christmas. It can just mean letting your usual style have a bit more fun for a few weeks.

I think festive dressing is one of the few times of year where we collectively give ourselves permission to be a bit extra. A bit playful. A bit nostalgic.

It’s not about looking perfectly styled or “done”. It’s about leaning into the season, the memories, and the fun of it, even if that means a novelty earring or a jumper you’d never wear in February.

For a few weeks, getting dressed gets to be about joy. And honestly? I think that’s a gift in itself.
