The Autumn shoe switch
This weekend I went to watch my kids play football and made the utter error of wearing my jelly M&S shoes. I have literally worn these shoes on repeat ALL summer and I love them. But my goodness, my feet were freezing.
And it made me realise that we are definitely getting to that point where we need to start thinking about our more autumn-appropriate shoes.
Which is quite handy because this Joy Drop is perfectly timed.
We’re not quite at full-on boot territory yet (though my feet are itchy for the comfort of a good heavy boot!) We’re in that weird in-between bit where it’s still not necessarily cold enough for boots, but your summer shoes are starting to feel a little bit wrong.
So what I’m looking for at this time of year is a shoe with a bit more substance to it.
Maybe we're moving away from things that feel very summery, jellies, sandals, wesged, canvas, woven fabrics, those sorts of things and towards leather, suede, richer fabrics and colours that feel a little bit more autumnal.
And actually, this is one of those really simple swaps we've been talking about.
You can wear exactly the same outfit you’ve been wearing, but change your summer sandals or jellies for a more substantial closed-toe shoe and suddenly the whole thing feels much more autumnal.
You don't necessarily need a new outfit. You might just need a new pair of shoes, so lets have a look at some of my faves I have spotted

Running-inspired trainers
The sporty trainer trend isn't going anywhere! Think lightweight, technical-looking styles that look just as good with jeans, trousers or a midi skirt as they do with your gym kit.
Neutrals but interesting
Sometimes, if your outfits are very colourful, you actually just want a neutral trainer that will work with everything but still has plenty of personality. Look for interesting colour combinations, texture and contrasting details to keep your outfits feeling considered without adding lots of colour.
Fun trainers
We all know the joy a colourful trainer can bring to any Joyfully Dressed outfit! Colour blocks, pattern, contrast, what’s not to love? Remember to protect any trainers that might get caught in the rain.
Backless mules
These are more of a transitional option and are really only going to be useful when it’s dry.
BUT they’ll be useful again next spring, and are a fun way to try a new trend as we move from sandals into shoes for cooler weather. They also look great with barrel jeans, if you’ve been struggling to know what to pair with that shape as the weather gets cooler.
Loafers
If trainers are your everyday go-to, loafers are an easy way to make an outfit feel a little more polished. From classic leather to textured finishes and interesting colours, there are loads of ways to make this trend work for your style.
Clogs & clog-style mules
With their chunky soles and easy slip-on shape, they’re a brilliant way to add a little more interest to your everyday autumn outfits. Wear them with jeans, wide-leg trousers or even dresses and skirts.
Ballet flats
Ballet flats are having a serious moment this autumn. From classic Mary Janes to playful prints and bold colours, there’s a version for everyone, and they’re a lovely way to make your everyday simple outfits feel a little more polished.
