Your best shorts

I’ve honestly been so proud of you all in the group this summer so many of you have stepped out of your comfort zones and rocked shorts, and it’s been amazing to see.

It’s something I can really relate to. Over the past few years, I’ve pushed myself to embrace wearing shorts too. Not because I suddenly woke up with different legs or have fallen in love with them overnight, but because they’re practical and, let’s be honest, sometimes it’s just too hot not to. They are, after all, legs and they do a bloody good job of getting me from A to B, chasing the kids around, and letting me join in on all the summer fun.

One thing I’ve learned? If you feel self-conscious in shorts, your first instinct might be to go longer (I see this A LOT!). But here’s the thing: long shorts often don’t do your legs any favours. They can cut your leg line in the wrong place, breaking the 1/3 rule we talk about so much (and you all know how magical that rule is for creating proportion).

If you're not self conscious of your legs long shorts can look really cool (and Bermuda shorts are actually having a trending moment, this is more of a tip for people who feel self conscious of that area!

Instead, the real trick is to choose shorts that aren’t tight around your legs. When the hemline is wider than your thigh, your legs look slimmer by contrast. It’s a little style illusion, but it works wonders and it’s what’s made the biggest difference to me and how I feel when I wear shorts!

When you’re looking at shorts online, check the hem on the model. Models usually have very slim legs (depending on the brand and the type of models they use), so you actually want the shorts to look really wide on them. If they look fitted on the model, they’ll be tighter on you. Some key search terms to try: A-line shorts, wide-leg shorts, paperbag shorts, pleated shorts.

So, let’s talk about how to find your perfect pair ones that feel good, look good, and suit your shape…

Universal principles (for all shapes)

  • Fabric: A bit of structure gives shape to legs and hips. Avoid anything too flimsy if you don’t want cling.

  • Rise: Mid- to high-rise is almost always more flattering than low-rise (same as our jeans rule!) it elongates legs and defines the waist.

  • Length: Test in front of a mirror, sit, squat, walk. Comfort + confidence is the goal with shorts you don’t want them to feel so tight they are uncomfortable!

  • Colour & texture: Lighter colours, pattern, and texture draw attention; darker colours slim. Think about where you want the focus, as always.

Hourglass

  • Best styles: Fitted waistband that nips in the waist, with slight A-line flare or cuff to balance hips and thighs.

  • Try: Tailored shorts, paperbag waist styles with a belt, mid-thigh length.

  • Avoid: Baggy shorts with no waist definition — they hide your shape.

Pear

  • Best styles: Lighter or patterned tops with darker, structured shorts to balance proportions. Flat front or minimal pleats to avoid extra volume at the hips.

  • Try: A-line shorts, high-waisted with side zip, tailored fabrics. Look out for curve ranges so they fit your waist and hips!

  • Avoid: Clingy jersey fabrics that grab the hips or thighs.

Apple

  • Best styles: Looser fit through the waist and tummy, straight leg that skims.

  • Try: Pull-on styles with a flat front, structured linen, slightly longer length.

  • Avoid: Super-tight waistbands that cut in or create bulges.

Rectangle

  • Best styles: Add curves with volume at the hips or waist.

  • Try: Shorts with tie belts, pleated fronts, or cuffed hems.

  • Avoid: Ultra-straight, flat styles with no detailing — they can look boxy.

Inverted Triangle

  • Best styles: Balance broader shoulders with volume and detail on the bottom half.

  • Try: Shorts with pockets, patterns, lighter colours, or pleats.

  • Avoid: Ultra-slim styles in dark colours — they can make shoulders look even broader.
