Ditch the guilt about wearing comfy clothes

Today’s Joydrop couldn’t have been better timed, my period started this morning, and when I got dressed I instantly reached for my comfiest trousers.

And that’s exactly what I want to talk about.

So many of us join JD saying we feel stuck in a rut of “comfy clothes.” Then we start learning what actually makes us feel good, what lights us up, what we want to wear (which is amazing). and I think somewhere along the way, it can start to feel like comfy clothes are the enemy.

Like they’re the reason your wardrobe didn’t feel good, and they’re not.

A huge part of being Joyfully Dressed for me, and something I won’t compromise on, is comfort. I don’t want to be wearing clothes that feel tight, itchy, or that I have to keep pulling at. I want to feel physically good in what I’m wearing.

So all of my clothes have to feel comfortable, but some days I need that even more. Jeans that feel fine on a normal day suddenly feel too restrictive or tight, blouses that felt fine last week feel too stiff this week.

So I go for full on comfort, but then its easy to feel bad or like your not bothering.

And I do get why we feel like that, when you’re trying to move away from the “baggy leggings”, “mum rut”, “can’t be bothered” phase, it’s easy to swing too far the other way and start thinking comfort is the problem.

And then when you do reach for something comfy, it can come with that little pang of guilt… like you’re not trying hard enough.

I’ve even seen people in the group apologise for “just throwing on something comfy.”

But it was never comfort that was the issue. It was just defaulting to the same kind of thing every single day, without really thinking about it.

And sometimes it’s worth asking yourself, is this what I actually need today… or is it just habit?

Because for most of us (and definitely me today)… sometimes you genuinely need comfort.

Some days you don’t want anything tight or restrictive, some days your body just says “no thanks” to a “proper” outfit… and that’s completely fine.

And actually, we’re really lucky right now because comfy, oversized, relaxed clothes are massively in style.

They key is just wearing them on purpose, choosing them because they fit your day, because that’s what you need!

And if you are in one of those “I just need comfort moments”, it doesn’t mean your outfits have to suddenly feel a bit… meh.

There are a few really simple things you can do to bring them back to feeling like you:

– Choosing comfy pieces in your colour season
– Swapping tight jeans for elasticated waist styles
– Adding a bit of jewellery
– Throwing on a layer (like a knit or jacket) to pull it together
– Going for a loose dress instead of defaulting to trousers
– Doing one small “effort” thing (hair, lipstick, even just earrings)

Those will all make a big difference.

Right I’m off to have a bath and eat a bar of chocolate!!
