Outfit repeating: Why it’s a skill, not a failure
It’s easy to start feeling like you’re bad at style when you see other people wearing a different outfit every single day.
There are so many things I want you to get from Joyfully Dressed. I want you to feel more confident in yourself. I want you to look in the mirror and like what you see. And I want you to walk into a room feeling comfortable in who you are and where you are.
I really want you to have a wardrobe full of clothes that you actually love wearing. Clothes that feel like you. Clothes that you reach for without overthinking and yes, clothes that you wear again and again.
But when you look at Instagram (or really, anywhere people are getting dressed online), outfit repeating can start to feel a bit… wrong. Like it’s boring. Or like you’ve somehow failed at style if you’re not constantly coming up with something new and exciting.
We see influencers wearing different outfits every day, mixing things up, playing with combinations, and it’s easy to think that that is what “doing it right” looks like. But remember there aim isn’t to feel good when they get dressed its either to inspire people with their outfit ideas, to see clothes or to gain more followers!
And there is space for experimenting, trying new things, seeing what works, tweaking outfits we already love and making our wardrobes work hard for us (and you know I love to encourage that).
But there’s also a really simple kind of joy in wearing something again that you already know looks and feels amazing on you.
And I don’t mean wearing the same jeans and jumper days in, days out, because that’s usually when things start to feel a bit stuck.
I mean choosing the same outfit again when you’re going out to dinner with your friends, because last time you wore it you felt great. Or wearing the outfit you know works when you’ve got a busy day ahead and want to feel good from the school run onwards. Or throwing on the same clothes when your watching your kids play football, as you confidently know it keeps you warm, cosy and looking good.
Here’s the simple takeaway:
If you’ve worn an outfit recently and felt really good in it, that outfit has already done its job, and you’re allowed (actually, I encourage you) to choose it again. Exactly as it is, styled the same, same accessories, a full carbon copy.
Choosing the outfit that already makes you feel good isn’t you being boring or lacking ideas. It’s you noticing what works. It’s you responding to how clothes make you feel, and trusting that feeling enough to repeat it.
And honestly, that’s how you build a style persona, by wearing repeatable outfits that consistently look and feel confidently like you.
