How to find the right shorts for your shape
The weather this week has been glorious, and hopefully you’ve managed to enjoy a little bit of it ☀️
Shorts can feel really tricky for lots of women, and for many of us they can feel like a huge mental barrier when summer arrives. But honestly, so much of the problem is usually the shorts themselves, not your body.
The reason shorts can feel so hard to shop for is because tiny details completely change how they sit on your body.
Rise. Length. Width. Fabric. Structure.
This is why understanding your body shape can make shopping feel so much easier, because you stop randomly trying on pairs that were never designed to work with your proportions in the first place.
I think a really simple rule with shorts is that if you feel conscious of your legs, you usually want a bit of space between your leg and the fabric, so they don’t feel skin tight or clingy. I quite often size up in shorts slightly just to create a bit more looseness and movement.
It’s also worth sometimes trying shorts that are slightly shorter than you’d normally reach for, as oddly this can often make your legs look longer and feel more balanced than styles that hit at an awkward point on the thigh. Obviously comfort matters most, but sometimes the styles we assume will feel “safer” can actually end up feeling frumpier or more restrictive on.
Triangle → shorts with a slightly wider leg opening and softer fabrics often work really well, as they stop the thigh area feeling too clingy or restrictive. Just like with the general triangle guidelines, keeping the shorts a little plainer can help draw the eye upwards.
Inverted Triangle → this is a shape that can often carry off more detail on the bottom half really beautifully. Pockets, pleats, texture, patterns and slightly fuller shapes can all look amazing on you.
Rectangle → if you sometimes feel a bit “straight up and down”, details like belts, pleats, paperbag waists or shaping around the waist can help create a bit more definition. Though honestly, this shape can usually wear lots of different styles really well.
Hourglass → softer tailored styles with some waist definition usually work really nicely on your shape and help keep that natural balance in the body.
Circle → lots of people with this shape prefer smoother waistbands, slightly longer lengths and fabrics that skim rather than cling, as they often just feel easier and more comfortable to wear.
Remember, you might have to try on a few pairs to find your perfect shorts, and thats perfectly fine.
Here are some fab shorts I have seen in the shops for each season.
