Grabbing a different starting piece for a new outfit
It’s so easy to get bored of your wardrobe.
Even when it’s jam-packed with clothes you love, you can still find yourself standing there thinking, I don’t know what to wear, reaching for the same outfit again… and feeling bored by it.
and yes that happens to everyone, me, other members, influences who always look pulled together.
There are a few ways I tackle that feeling:
• Starting with a different item each day
• Giving each day of the week a loose outfit “idea”
• Styling the same item in different ways across a week
Today’s Joydrop is about the most useful one of all: changing your starting point when you get dressed.
One thing I know happens to all of us is this: we take our clothes off in the evening, put them away (or leave them on the chair… eek), and the next day it’s very easy to reach for the same jeans again. Maybe with a different top or jumper. Then the next day… and the next.
This isn’t really about cleanliness or how often you wash your clothes.
Even if you’re not wearing the exact same pair of jeans, you’re often wearing something strikingly similar.
And after a while, your outfits start to feel stuck, and thats what makes you feel bored with what you’re wearing.
What type of outfit have you been defaulting to lately?
Instead, I want you to try reaching for a different type of outfit each day.
If you’re wearing jeans today, try structured trousers tomorrow or if you’re wearing a dress today, try casual trousers tomorrow. All you have to do is keep mixing up the starting point.
Something which I have also started doing this year, is I’ve been using a system for picking my outfits across the week. It takes out some of the mental load and gives me a clear starting point when I get dressed.
It also means I’m intentionally changing things up, so I don’t slip into a rut.
For example every week, I’ll follow this pattern of different starting points:
Mon – Elevated jeans
Tues – Casual trousers
Weds – Dress
Thurs – Structured trousers
Fri – Skirt
Sat – Jeans
You obvioulsy don’t have to follow this pattern at all, it just gives you an idea of how I think about things when I get dressed, but it is a useful thing to think about and might be a fun way to have a think about your wardrobe.
And if you do start to do this, remember if a certain type of outfit doesn’t fit your day, you can just skip it.
This isn’t about hard-and-fast rules, it’s just about creating a simple system that makes getting dressed feel easier and a bit more interesting.
