Finding your perfect brown
I think people sometimes struggle with brown because it feels like it should naturally be a warm colour.
And yes, there are lots of beautiful browns in the Spring and Autumn palettes, there is an abundance of warm and cosy browns which are in the shops at the moment which work for you.
But brown definitely isn’t just for warm seasons.
There are plenty of browns for Summer and Winter too (and actually I’ve spotted a lot in the shops at the moment - i’ll be adding in pieces to the Curated Wardrobe this week) you just need to know what you’re looking for.
When I’m thinking about the distinction between a warm brown and a cool brown, I tend to think about the colours sitting underneath the brown. Warm browns tend to have more red, yellow or orange in them, while cool browns tend to have more grey, blue or even black. A neutral brown sits somewhere in between, without strongly leaning either way.
Springs are on the hunt for: warm, clear browns with a golden or slightly yellow undertone, good terms to search for are camel, caramel, honey, toffee and warm cognac.
Summers are looking for soft, muted browns rather than very warm, golden browns. Think pinky browns, taupes, mushroom, stone and soft cocoa shades. Good terms to search for are rose brown, taupe, mushroom, cocoa, stone and mole.
Autumns are looking for: Rich, warm, earthy browns with a golden, orange or reddish undertone, good terms to search for are chocolate, chestnut, rust, mahogany and warm espresso.
Winters are looking for: Deep, cool and richer browns, think espresso, bitter chocolate and very dark chocolate brown. Look for browns that feel deep and crisp rather than golden or orangey. When shopping, try search terms like espresso brown, bitter chocolate, dark chocolate, coffee brown, cool brown and deep cocoa.
